    Hi Mel,

I know, I am a bad blogger for not visiting lately. ;) Hope things are going well for you!

I just read my friend Najma’s blog for the first time in months. She said she applied for a visa to attend graduate school in Germany where her fiance currently lives. Unfortunately, her visa was denied. I wonder if you might know of anything that would help her out? Here is a link to her post:

Ooooof, if he was a German citizen with a high enough income I’d say marry, answer some extremely personal questions, wait for months and months and months, and finally they’ll let her in.

Najma’s fiance is an Iraqi from Mosul who graduated from Mosul University last year. Somehow he was able to get a visa to attend graduate school in Germany. Najma graduated from Mosul University this year with top marks for her school. She is very bright! However, she could not get a visa for graduate school in Germany. Strange. Has the German government recently restricted visas for Iraqis?

I just bought Unseen Academicals the other day and thought of Anarki. We haven’t heard anything from him since he went private. How’s he doing? Oh, and what did you think of the book? :)

David, no, they’ve been making it difficult all along from what I hear.
Accepting refugees? Well, maybe, and only Christians cos they’re the only ones in danger there.
And about students I heard that they’re pretty much kept in limbo all the time cos they don’t get a visa for the whole time of their studying here, but have to reapply every few months - with the option of being rejected…

Lynnette, we haven’t been talking as such, but we exchange the odd comment on Facebook. Apart from occasional sport induced pains he seems to be doing fine.
The book….. ffffff. I can’t say I liked it much. Anarki loved it, so who knows what you will think. :)

Glad to hear he’s alive. :) Even with a few pains.

A split decison on the book, eh? Well, we’ll see. It will take me a while to get to it, as I’ve got a backlog. But, you know me, I like to collect them when I see them. ;) I wouldn’t want to forget one. The used bookstore owner in my town recommended “American Gods” by Neil Gaiman. Have you read it?

Well, I don’t know if you have ever read anything by Gaiman? His stories are a bit…. huh… dark at times.
I’ve read “American Gods” and 2 books with short stories (one also containing poems), “Fragile Things” and “Smoke & Mirrors”, by him.

I don’t know if you are aware of the book “Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch” by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett? Maybe that’s the connection your book dealer made. ;)

Yes, I’ve read “Good Omens”. It was okay. I think I liked Terry Pratchett alone better. And you’re right, I brought in that book to sell ( yes, I know, sacrilege! ) and that’s when he mentioned “American Gods”. I did buy it. I haven’t read it yet though. The salesperson at the Borders where I am a “fixture” looked at me kind of funny, because that was not my usual kind of purchase. But I assured her that I liked Pratchett’s humor and she said then I might like Gaiman as well. We’ll see. :) As for dark, well, I even broke down and bought a Norman Mailer(it was in the bargain bin) and that looks very dark. But I read the first page and really liked the writing style. Periodically I go through a phase where I want to delve into other authors.

I think we are almost done with fall clean up, so maybe I can sit down and just read for an afternoon. I hope so, anyway. :)
