Eating out and at home
For his 75th birthday our father invited some family and the neighbours to a Chinese restaurant we frequent at times.
Like always, the food was delicious.
As we only met some of the family there and not before, the odd gift was heaped upon our father.
Little did we know that the owner of the restaurant was observing this and coming to the obvious conclusion: Here was some anniversary going down.
Much later, when she brought the bill, she also placed this in front of our father, announcing “And this is for you”.
I am still wallowing in thankful sentimentality. This was such a nice gesture.
Well, one more reason to go there when eating out I’d say.
.
Coming to the eating at home part, this is my reply to Attawie’s food post.
Guess this!!

That was very nice of the restaurant owner to give your father such a nice gift! He must be her favorite customer.
I will guess the soup is a spinach soup.
November 10th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Dunno about favourite customer, but it was definitely very nice.
0 points for you though, David.

I liked the Tea dishes set. Although I didn’t like the view of that weird green soup.
Happy Birthday to your vater, dear!
November 10th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Weird green soup? You call my (censored) soup weird green soup?!
-5 points for Caesar
November 10th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
But didn’t Caesar guess correctly? It was weird green soup, wasn’t it?
November 10th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
Or, should I say “Weird Green Soup”, as names are written with capital letters at the beginning…?
November 10th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
-10 points for Mafdet
November 11th, 2008 at 8:26 am
Happy Birthday to your Father
and it was a great gesture from the restaurant owner and a great present as well. Is that mustard soup ?
November 11th, 2008 at 11:24 am
And I’m proud of every single one of those -10 points. :-D
November 11th, 2008 at 11:48 am

Is it lentil soup?
November 12th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Happy belated birthday to your father.
The soup looks like a somewhat unusual rendition of pea soup to me.
November 12th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
@David: I don’t think lentil soup generally has such viscocity, plus isn’t it generally more of a diarrhea brown?
November 12th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
@ David: +5 Super Psy Power points for guessing what is in my fridge.
0 points for the soup in question though.
@ Frans: Sorry, not pea soup.
… while the soup to guess is diarrhea green. Indeed.
@ all: Hint: It’s growing in my garden and is only green on top.
@ all again: Thanks for all the birthday wishes.

broccoli soup
or is it okra… if it’s growing in your garden then it must be okra!
Never heard of okra soup but it’s a wild guess
but i definitely love broccoli soup
Happy belated birthday to your dad. I’m not a fan of tea but i love chinaware and how they glaze it.. ceramic!
November 13th, 2008 at 12:42 am
No, the okra plants all died….
Would make some slimey soup, I guess.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:40 am
Pea Soup?
didnt read the previous comments so as not to spoil my guess!
oh and the new Nickelback album is out! i know a certain tree-hugger who once admitted to listening to “more than just noise” so i guess this would be of interest!
name of album is Dark Horse
oh and what a nice looking gift! how nice!
take care you
November 13th, 2008 at 2:41 am
i should probably comment on David’s blog.. i really should..
sorry dude, really hadnt much time..
November 13th, 2008 at 10:40 am
You should have read them maybe. Not pea soup.
November 13th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
What a nice gift! Sweet. The sight of the soup scared me at first, but no longer. Took a while getting used to, mind you!
November 13th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
‘S good soup…..
November 13th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
That was a very thoughtful gift the restaurant owner gave your father. And lovely too!
I hope he is doing well.
Let’s see, I waaaas going to guess pea soup as well, but seeing as it was already nixed, I will try another guess.
Hmmmm….it grows in your garden, but is only green on top…
I know some people who just love cooked beat tops, so perhaps you can make a soup out of them?
Or maybe carrot top soup?
Er….is guessing twice cheating?
“Abdullah Damluji”
This name sounds familiar. But it’s been soooooo long, I can’t remember…maybe if he posted something besides geeky techy stuff it might jog my memory.
Dang it! My cookies disappeared.
November 13th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
I used the green and the ungreen parts of it, throwing some of the green away….
Just guess your way through the garden, guys, lol!
You’re right; I have no clue either who that guy is, but anyone’s welcome to comment here, so….
Awwwwwwwwww! *bakes you some new ones*
November 14th, 2008 at 12:05 am
Turnip?
November 14th, 2008 at 12:09 am
Nope. Think bigger.
November 14th, 2008 at 4:45 am
Is it carrot soup?
November 14th, 2008 at 4:46 am
Hey Abdullah,
No worries my friend! I haven’t exactly been a stellar performer with my blog visiting lately either.
November 14th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Perhaps zucchini soup? I don’t know if that’s possible, but uh, yeah…
November 14th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
@ David: Weird carrots you must be growing over in Indiana….
@ Frans: Maybe I should try that some day…..?
November 14th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
LEEK! OMG LEEK SOUP!
Do I get a prize?
November 14th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
1 point.
And a free hair dryer…
November 14th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Rats! I could have used that hair dryer.
Oh well, leek wasn’t what I was going to guess next, anyhow.
November 15th, 2008 at 7:17 am
Is a leek anything like an onion?
November 15th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Leek soup? I know soup with leek in it, but this is… mashed leek? Boiled so long that its organic structure deteriorated?
November 15th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
@ David: Guess you can call it a cousin. Taste is a bit different, for instance, my sis likes onions in all shapes and colours (including spring onions) but doesn’t like leek.
@ Frans: I fried the leek (and some herbs and garlic) in oil for a bit, added some water, let it boil till it was done, blended it, added more water and spices…. et voilà!
November 16th, 2008 at 3:12 am
I like onion soup very much. Never tried any leeks though. Your soup looks like a cream soup. I prefer my soup to have big chunks.
November 16th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Hair dryer? Meh. Yay I guess. Can I sell it on e-bay?
Mel, have u ever tried adding potato? Leek and potato soup is the best!
November 16th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
@ David: Blended -> cream soup
@ Lelly: Well, you could always try.
“Blue-grey brand name hair dryer, in its teens. Motor still in good working condition, but be sure to open a window when operating the hair dryer so the smoke and fumes can clear.”
Yup, sounds like a gold mine.
Potato? Blegh!
November 17th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
What? maybe its an english thing. Its the most famous and classic soup ever.
Link
