What was that woman smoking?! ;)

Hey, I bought a Black Forest Ham. Strangely, it said packaged in Arkansas (boyhood home of Bill Clinton) in fine print on the back. Maybe someone in Germany should sue for the name stealing? I think there is a Black Swamp in Arkansas. Not sure I would buy the same ham if it said Black Swamp on the label! :P

"The term "Black Forest ham" is a Protected designation of origin in the European Union, meaning that anything sold in the EU as "Black Forest ham" must come from the Black Forest. However, this is not the case in non-EU countries, particularly in United States and Canada; as a result, most of the "Black Forest ham" sold in the non-EU countries bears little or no resemblance to the genuine product." Anyway, good question indeed.

Well, is the ham at least any good?

The only really good Black Forest ham can be bought in the Black Forest.

Thanks for the link Frenzie. So, real Black Forest ham costs $8.00/pound. Well, I paid about $2.00/pound. It is some sort of WalMart brand ham.

Mel, the ham is pretty good, but not the best I ever had. At least, I don't think it was smoked with swamp weed. ;)

So, what do those real Black Forest pigs eat to make them taste so good? Some sort of old growth mushrooms, or maybe ancient ginseng? Is there a very old secret recipe known only to Black Forest Gnomes? ;)
