Modern crusade weapons

Deprecated: preg_replace(): The /e modifier is deprecated, use preg_replace_callback instead in /www/htdocs/w0081e40/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 75

I read something on Omar’s blog today (post mainly in German), caught myself IM’ing all and sundry about it and thought “What are you doing there? You’ve got a blog yourself. Publish something!”

For all of you who - like me - never considered pig’s trotters as food (Anyone for a nice knuckle sandwich? ;) ) but are loath to simply always throw everything away, here’s a real novel idea for a different use: as a modern weapon for our Christian values.

How (and probably why) so, you ask? Aha! Norway is showing us the way.

In the Norwegian city of Bergen the Muslim community will be without a mosque for a time as the old one will close at the end of this month, while the building of the new one is apparently behind schedule.
Labour Party politician Jerad Abdelmajid suggested that the city’s Muslims should hold their Friday prayers in Torgallmenningen, Bergen’s central square, from then on.
Now, that might indeed prove a nuisance if it is a big community, but I suppose that the new mosque had been promised to be finished on time, and would say that it is the Muslim community’s right to express their unhappiness about this problem by peaceful means. (I distinctly remember people saying that “they” should learn peaceful protest instead of setting flags on fire and becoming violent after some of the Muslim over-reactions to the cartoon scandal… And what better way of peaceful protest than public prayer?)

But of course in a civilized country «Muslims having their Friday prayers with their butts in the air in the city center is no solution» (Vidar Kleppe, leader of the “Demokratene”, an extreme populist party) and in turn calls for a civilized response.

City council representative «Kenneth Rasmussen told newspaper Dagbladet’s web site that Bergen residents should hang up pig’s feet and play pig squeals over loudspeakers to scare off Muslims, and claimed these tactics worked when he was a soldier for the United Nations in Somalia and Lebanon in the 1990s.» (quotes and general info taken from The Aftenposten)

As an aside, this throws a very interesting light on what United Nations soldiers are doing over there in foreign countries. (Or on what Mr Rasmussen was smoking while being there.)

The Iraqi Konfused Kid summed the reason for a (real or imagined?) success of this tactic up pretty well in a chat I had with him today:

Konfused Kid: That’s oversimplification surely
Konfused Kid: They weren’t probably scared of the pig’s feet
Konfused Kid: but of the crazy squealing dude with the gun

Who wouldn’t be…?
Just close your eyes and picture the scene, if you will…. Armed persons (United Nations soldiers or no) running at you, waving pig’s feet and squealing (Hey, that reminds me of Braveheart)….
Or an army vehicle hung with pig’s feet driving down your street, playing squeals from a speaker…

On a more humorous note, here’s the start of our conversation on this topic:

Melantrys: *waves a pig’s foot at you and squeals*
Melantrys: So what’s your instinctive reaction to this?
Konfused Kid: huh?
Melantrys: Er, seriously, in Norway some politicians consider this a way to “fight” Muslims praying in the middle of the street
Konfused Kid: Death to the infidels!

P.S.: Make sure to watch the video on Omar’s post as well….

how come us Muslims have Hamstrings? isn’t Ham forbidden in islam?
guess it should be renamed as Beefstrings ala “Beef”Burger.

    Idiots.

let’s just hope this doesn’t turn into another fiasco like last year’s.

I’m not much of a foot eater, but I love bacon and honey roasted spiral sliced ham! :) Btw, the foot and squeal tactic would work against Orthodox Jews, as well. Interesting, that Jews and Muslims may have more in common with each other than they think!

    Hey there,

and claimed these tactics worked when he was a soldier for the United Nations in Somalia and Lebanon in the 1990s.

So typical !!! And so stupid !!! lol

Interesting, that Jews and Muslims may have more in common with each other than they think!

David, you can’t imagine how much Islam is closer to Judism than other relegions. I have some Jewish friends who tell me things that really surprise me, like the Kosher thing for instance.

Why doesn’t someone lend the Muslim community a hall until the mosque is done? Or are there too many people? Isn’t it a little chilly in Norway right about now to be having open air gatherings?

Even beyond Kosher food and circumcision, historically, Muslims and Jews worked together in many countries to build better societies. For centuries, Jews were persecuted by Christians, but they were welcomed by Muslims. Unfortunately, Israeli government policies have poisoned this centuries old symbiotic relationship.

@ aNarki: Well, as long as the Bergen Muslim community simply does their Friday prayers with “concerned Bergen citizens” waving pig’s feet in the air and squealing, it’ll be “the other side” for a change to create bad publicity…. ;)

David, you will burn in hell for eating pork! :P ;)

@ Treasure: Well, that’s why I just had to write about this.
Kosher…… hm…. I still have this yummy kosher (and vegan!) chocolate left from my last order….. *drools onto keyboard*

    Mafdet….. Medication. Now. :P

Lynnette, I’m afraid he was dead serious.
I have no clue how large the community is. Googling the stuff threw up too many blogs and places where people were applauding Rasmussen and raving about the need to fight Islam for me to wanna keep searching…

“Come to my tent / I’m gonna circumcise you.” Ever listened to Coal Chamber, aNarki?
Ann Who? Ok, I googled her, but that only makes me repeat the question. Sounds like a person I wouldn’t wish to meet. And what exactly does your question mean, dear?

David, there’s one dude doing research on Muslim aid for Jews who fled the Nazis. I sent some link to Chikitita once. Remind me to look it up when I’m less tired.

    Anarki,

Thanks for referring to Andalusia. I knew something about the history of Jewish people in southern Spain, but I didn’t know the name of the region. Prior to the creation of the State of Israel, and the first of the Arab/Israeli wars, there were very large Jewish populations in many Arab countries. As I have mentioned before, some of my ancestors are Jewish. My paternal family name was once Turkat, which basically translates as “the Turk”. This name dates back about 300 years to the time that my ancestors spent living in Turkey. Later they immigrated to Russia and Ukraine. I know that Egypt, Iraq, and Iran all had very large Jewish communities that date back many centuries. Indeed, the Iranian Jews can trace their ancestry all the way back to the Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great who freed them from slavery in ancient Babylonia. This community is probably the most ancient group of Jews. They have lived in Iran for more than 2500 years. Even today, at least 30,000 Jews remain in Iran, however, their lives have been made more difficult by the Islamic Revolution. Anyway, if anyone is interested, check out this link which discusses the history of Jews in Arab countries:

What, what, what anger???? Coal Chamber always make me happy. (The only thing about them that makes me angry is that they were better than Devil Driver, but that it seems that Dez prefers screaming for Devil Driver to screaming and singing (hhhhhm, that voice…. :dream: ) for Coal Chamber :( ). You should listen to “Amir of the desert” someday. It’s a weird….. song.

Ok, Lynnette, David, aNarki, I dug up the links I sent to Chikitita.

Satloff revisits the Holocaust to document the role that Arabs played in saving Jews, as a way of helping to bridge the divide among Arabs and Jews. Satloff, director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, calls his book “part history, part travelogue, part memoir” (Politics & Prose)

Satloff talking about his book “Among the Righteous”, long version (almost 52 minutes) or short excerpt on YouTube.

    i like him because
    a) he’s very well researched on subject matter.
    b) he is fair to us Arabs. or more accurately, neutral. :) which is a great thing nowadays..

so: talking books and stuff: why not try Pratchett as well? this comes better off from Mel herself, but i’m now officially a devoted fan. :)

I don’t know, Anarki, I’ve kind of soured on Clancy. The last few have been almost cartoonish. His best were the first ones. And no, I don’t care at all for the ones he writes with someone else.

I can’t help but wonder sometimes if Khaled Sheikh Mohammed isn’t a Clancy fan. The airplane plot is right out of a Clancy novel. One of my co-workers used to be a big fan of Clancy’s until he came out with that book where someone flew a plane into the Capital building. He quit reading after that because it sounded too un-realistic. Hmm…

I’ve gotten into Vince Flynn. Of course I’m probably a little biased as he’s a Minnesota author. ;)

Another good Minnesota author, if you like murder mysteries, is William Kent Kruger.

Pratchett? Only one name? I will have to “Google” him. :)

Currently I’m reading Michael B. Oren’s “Power, Faith and Fantasy”. I can see why people in the Middle East are so paranoid about the imperialsim thing. I’m also reading a book by Greg Iles. I like to switch off. :)

  36. Melantrys Says:

Deprecated: preg_replace(): The /e modifier is deprecated, use preg_replace_callback instead in /www/htdocs/w0081e40/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 75

Not one of the first. Definitely not one of the first. If you become a Pratchett fan you should read them eventually, but he was still struggling to find his style and create and populate the Disc, so they rather suck compared to the later ones.
I, personally, started with “Reaper Man” which was a pretty good start. All books with Death in are good.

    A list of my faves:

    Pyramids
    Guards! Guards!
    Reaper Man
    Lords and Ladies
    Men at Arms
    Feet of Clay
    Hogfather
    Jingo
    Night Watch
    Thud!

It’s a series you can enter at any point, but of course you can see characters evolve and events build up on each other, so even if you can understand the later books without having read the older ones it’d still be advisable to start “early”, like with “Pyramids”, or “Guards! Guards!”.

He also writes books for younger readers, the newest of which are set on the Discworld as well. “The Wee Free Men” is really good, for instance. But you should start with a regular one, I guess.

    That’d be Night Watch, dear.
It’s funny, but it’s also kind of… dark. I read a review criticizing that darkness as an unforgivable style change, but I see it as development instead. His sense of humour is rather dark anyway.

The point of all my blabbering: Go, get it, it’s brilliant!

Nightwatch, for me, is the best yet!
its dark, yet its so.. Pratchett! maybe cuz b4 it all i read were the more humorous stories..

a close second is Feet of Clay (HUGE Robocop/Terminator fan here, so bias is present!)

BUT: i recommend reading Men At Arms before either, as it lays the foundations of the Watch characters :D

Lynnette: yep, definitely Clancy’s early works were his best: i started with Red Storm Rising and that kinda set the scene for the “epic” scale of his stories..
his later works were NOT co-authored with him: i’m referring to Tom Clancy’s Netforce, SysOps (? OpSys?) or such other book titles which have a subtitle to them..
they were all written by OTHERS, under license from Clancy -> henceforth, are not 10% as good.

you can spot most of them right away tho: just follow these two simple rules:

    1. check if book WIDTH is less than 1.5 inch, that’s a dead giveaway, in ebooks, under 400 pages.

    2. check the cover: if the title has a subtitle, walk away, RUN away! :D

there are a few exceptions.. i can’t charge my brain fast enough to remember tho :)

Red Storm Rising is very good, so is Rainbow Six, Red October obviously, the “Jack Ryan in USSR” books are very good as well.

Also, I have far more books than time to read them.

I know what you mean, David! :) Imelda Marcos had shoes and I have books.

    Mel,

It might take me awhile because I’m still slogging through a couple of books now. But I’ll let you know. :)

    Anarki,

My favorite was Red October. Although I liked Red Storm Rising. I didn’t care too much for Rainbow Six. Anyhow I don’t rush out and buy him anymore like I used too.

Yup, you’re right about the other series. I was being sloppy in my comment. :)

If you like pure adventure, try Clive Cussler. His earlier books where he wrote alone, not the later ones where he writes with someone else.

The movie “Sahara” is based on one of his books. The Dirk Pitt character is great. Course I’m a woman, so I would say that. ;)

Okay, if I’m going to get any reading done, I better get going. :)

    *whispers softly* Don’t tell anyone.

And they are all at interesting points. The history book is just on the eve of WWI. The Iles book is at the point where the main character, along with someone who I assume will be his love interest, is in a car being chased by the NSA. And in the Pratchett book poor Teppic is in the process of falling 80 feet because of a missing plank. I will assume that he survives, since I know you would not recommend an author who kills off the main character in the first few pages. Right? ;)

    2. Well, at least that gives me the time to read a book 5 times or more. ;)

@ Lynnette: Forbidden peeking is only if you read the ending first….
Weeeeeell, on Discworld, death is an interesting thing as you’ll meet Death, so you’ll never know with Pratchett…… :smug:

Then he moved the family to Morocco for a few years while he researched the book. Probably wont read it right away, but the interviews with eyewitnesses should be fascinating. I wouldn’t be surprised if a movie is made based on the book.

@ David:  Hhhhhhhhhhhm, first all that flute talk and now you want to ride a broomstick…? :x

@ aNarki: Maybe we should let David explain about broomsticks (and about his… interest… in them) to your dad. :s

    Mel,

I love the smileys, now that I know the code, I’ll be smiling a lot!
    :smug:

Yeah, I liked that line too. :D

I know, I’ve just been over to the Kid’s. I was able to read the post, even in it’s squished format. (Sounds like it’s the resolution that’s the problem for me.) I didn’t realize he had such problems with his Dad. Although I remember him mentioning something before. *sigh* :(

    Anarki,

    Awww, anytime…

    David,

    I understand the guitar, but a broomstick…?? Hmmm…

    Wow, more smiley freaks. :D

Yeah, the resolution answer is the one the Kid gave me as well. He said that was his guess at least and, well, he wasn’t exactly in the mood to look for faults.

Lynnette, you forgot to leave a space between the … and the .

And as for the other one, well, you forgot his other arm :P

Want me to sneak in and heal your smileys? ;)

Anarki, I have seen Charmed a few times. The show does have a certain appeal. ;) Arab witches? Please tell us more!

Mel, Freud once said, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” :P Broomstick riding, Harry Potter style, looks like it might be quite painful! I would have to install a proper seat first. ;)

Lynnette, have you ever heard of the book, “Fear of Flying”? I had that book in mind wrt my allusion to flight. The broomstick was simply a flying device associated with H.P. Now, if you understand guitars, perhaps you could enlighten Mel. ;)

Ohhhhhh, let me try again…I didn’t know it was picky about spaces.

And I could have swore I put in his other arm…oh well. :D

Nah, might as well leave sleeping smileys lay. ;)

    David,

    Thanks for the broomstick clarification.

Nope, never heard of that book. And the guitar thing is alllllll yours.

wasn’t Fear of Flying an Erica Jong book?
i dont remember much flying inside it..
    ;)

@Lynnette: i really dont think its the resolution:
    first:
You use HIGHER res. than US, so, if anything, WE would see it squished, YOU would see it spaced far in between.

second: like i said: its mostly when Images are used in conjuncture with Blogger’s crappy HTML support..
i’ve seen this problem pop up in Picture HTML, and JavaScript HTML.

    @Mel:
well, what can i say? i always look good :D

i stand corrected @ Erica Jong..
thing is, i was like 14 or 15 when i read it, and for me it was all about
    “TEH SEX!!!!!!”
or something close to that anyway..

101 comments.. they should make a movie about me, starring Glenn Close (?) scrub that, in my movie i want Molly Ringwald. :D

Anarki, I haven’t actually read Fear of Flying (I learned of the book while studying psychology), however, I do applaud your well-readness! :) As I recall, the title is suggestive of sexual inhibition. The idea is that if one is not afraid to “fly”, one has overcome such inhibitions. Mark my words, Harry Potter will be riding a Nimbus 9000 Stratocruiser in the next movie!! :D
